Dr Federico Mayor Zaragoza

Dr Federico Mayor Zaragoza, a former member of the Auroville International Advisory Council, passed away on 19 December. A scientist and professor (biochemistry / pharmacy), Dr Mayor was Minister of Education during the first period of the current Spanish democracy and presided over UNESCO as Director-General for twelve years.

Ever since UNESCO declared 21st June as International Yoga Day, momentum on yogasana keeps gathering. With a much needed fillip coming from the government of India, Auroville took the initiative last year to introduce ten simple yoga asanas for daily practice for children and adults in the region.

The story of the Tsunamika doll is well-known to Aurovilians and friends of Auroville. The Tsunamika came from Auroville’s Upasana design and garment unit when the people involved felt moved to help alleviate the tragedy of the December 2004 tsunami.

On October 12th, Auroville architect Ajit Koujalgi, aged 66, passed away in Apollo hospital in Chennai. He succumbed to the severe injuries he had sustained ten days earlier in a fall from the roof of his house in Samasti community.

With the demise of Dr. Kireet Joshi on 14 September 2014, the Aurobindonian firmament has lost one of its brightest stars. Born on 10 August 1931, he studied philosophy and law at the Elphinstone College under the University of Bombay.
